Earth Day—April 22—marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. Around the 1970s industries were emitting tons of smoke and sludge with little to no attention to the consequences. The idea for a national day dedicated to the environment came after witnessing major events take place at the time such as the large oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, the war in Vietnam, student organized protests all over the nation, and a lack of concern over growing environmental problems. On April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to talk about fighting against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, loss of wilderness, and extinction of wildlife in massive coast-to- coast rallies in attempt to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment.

This phrase – coined by an East Central H.S. AP Environmental Science student – demonstrates the link between clean air and vibrant communities. We hope to increase awareness about activities that contribute to air pollution and the changes we can make to improve air quality. At Earth Day we want to emphasize that improving air quality is more than a desire to preserve the environment, it is a responsibility to the health and well-being of San Antonio residents. Come out and celebrate how quality air can contribute to a quality life![/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”3.20.2″][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”3.20.2″][et_pb_toggle title=”Toggle for More” _builder_version=”3.20.2″]As part of our “Quality Air, Quality Life” theme, the WDC partnered with UT Health’s Air Quality Academy and La Printeria to coordinate a semester of print training with high school students. From the prints produced by the Fall 2018 cohort, one design was chosen by the Earth Day Committee to represent Earth Day 2019. The winning design is titled “The Other Half” and was created by Bianca Perez-Hernandez and Eloy Jacobo, both are with the Good Samaritan Youth Advisory Commitee.

“The colors that are included in the piece were chosen to add a creative state of mind instead of repeating colors that would typically be used. One side is a tree simply representing the kind we usually see, and the other side represents industrial factories. While there are many artistic representations demonstrating the effects that pollution can have on air quality, this piece is created to show both sides of what our world has come to be. In the end, we all take part in polluting our world. This piece was not created to blame the industries who take part in polluting the environment, but to make all aware of the other half; a side many choose to ignore.”

Over the course of several weeks, high school students are trained in printmaking to produce art that conveyed the link between the environment and human health. The curriculum kicks-off with presentations from professionals that spoke to a wide array of topics related to air quality: health, energy production, advocacy, transportation and pollution. This youth arts endeavor is made possible through collaboration from The Air Quality Academy (a partnership between UT Health San Antonio School of Nursing and the Aetna Foundation), La Printería, and Westside Development Corporation. Participating students for Fall 2018 were from the Good Samaritan After-School Program and East Central H.S. AP Environmental Science.[/et_pb_text][et_pb_toggle title=”More Information” open_toggle_text_color=”#000000″ open_toggle_background_color=”#ffffff” closed_toggle_text_color=”#000000″ closed_toggle_background_color=”#ffffff” _builder_version=”3.19.5″]The program is an opportunity for students from historically marginalized communities to be exposed to various professionals from health science, advocacy, and art fields. The workshops encourage students to think critically on relevant issues of health and allow them to apply their learning through hands-on printmaking training. Students finish the program with a deeper understanding of how environmental health relates to their daily lives. Participants also develop printmaking techniques that have real labor-value and serve as a means of creative expression.

The Fall 2018 Air Quality Academy closed with a gallery that was installed at the UT Health Dolph Briscoe Jr. Library, 7703 Floyd Curl Dr, San Antonio, TX. The gallery was on display December 10, 2018 thru January 14, 2019. The official gallery opening took place on December 13, 2018 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm with light appetizers, refreshments, and an appearance from Councilwoman Ana Sandoval.

Fiesta Verde: for the next 300 years

An Official Fiesta San Antonio event and is put on by the Westside Development Corporation and The Earth Day Committee. Since 1996, the citywide event has enabled community members to show support for the protection of the local environment, public health, and our planet. In 2017 the Westside Development Corporation, a city-delegate agency and non-profit, was appointed fiscal sponsor for San Antonio Earth Day. With a mission to foster economic development, create healthy communities and preserve the character of our city, the WDC is looking to the city’s leadership to grow comprehensive environmental policy and programming in our communities in the near future.

Earth Day

Earth Day reminds us that this planet is our home, and it is also the source of the resources we need to live. This significant day focuses our attention on how we all can be more environmentally friendly in the neighborhoods of the cities where we live. Conservation of our resources significantly enhances the quality of life of our homes and the surrounding area. We need to preserve these natural beauties for the long haul — for ourselves and for those who come after us. We need to give Earth Day a huge priority and to remember that it is not just one day a year; it is every day.An Official Fiesta San Antonio event and is put on by the Westside Development Corporation and The Earth Day Committee. Today, the fight for a clean environment continues with increasing urgency, as the ravages of climate change become more manifest every day. We invite you to be a part of Earth Day 2019, April 20, 2019 at Woodlawn Lake Park and help write many more chapters into the Earth Day San Antonio Book.
